Response to Hotel Rwanda

It was my second time watching Hotel Rwanda. I watched Hotel Rwanda when I was in 8th grade in middle school. However, I had the different feeling back then. I didn't really care what happened because it didn't happen to me and I just felt that it was too bad for them. But this time, I had more serious thoughts on this movie and this whole genocide. First of all, it made me feel scary because it occured in 1994 which is very recent. This can be happened any time and maybe it is happening right now somewhere in the world. So the question is how should the world prevent this when ohter western countries show indifference to Africans? The way how UN (United Nations) worked on this Rwanda Genocide made me feel angry. However, as in the movie said

poetry(analysis TPCASTT)

Zimmer's Head THudding against the Blackboard
Paul Zimmer
At the blackboard I had missed
Firve number problems in a row,
And was about to foul a sixth,
When the old, exasperated nun
Began to pound my head agianst
My six mistakes. When I cried,
She threw me back into my seat,
Where I hid my head and wore
That very day I'd be a poet,
And curse her yellow teeth with this.
TPCASTT Analysis
T- title: the title of this poem "Zimmer's Head Thudding against the Blackboard" means he hits his head on the blackboard which forshadows that he is going to have some failures in the class.
P- paraphrase: In the class, I missed a lot of problems and in the sixth problem the old teacher stroke my head. I cried and I hated her and I decided to be a poet.
C- connnotation: Imagery, at the very last line when he said "curse her YELLOW teeth", this indicates that not only she is old but also indicates that he hates her and that's why he used the color yellow which make people to think dirty and disgusting.
A- attitude : the author's tone is somehow hatred. He talks how his teacher treated him and he got upset because of her.
S- shifts : in this poem, the word swore and curse make it clear about Zimmer's future and his career. That two words enabled him to be a poet.
T-title (re-evaluation): the title means his failures during his class time which he missed many problems and the teacher kind of insulted him in a way.
T- Theme: I believe there is no real theme of this poem because this poem is the story of Paul Zimmer. However, in this poem I can see some motivation because of the teacher's hatred toward Zimmer. No matter how his teacher tortured him physically and mentally, he did not let himself feel down but chose his career and worked harder. As I read this poem, the famous phrase came up in my mind which is " No pain, No gain".

Question 8

* entry of your choice

What does Animal Farm relates to?

When I first read this novel, Animal Farm, I was actually surprised because every single characters were based on real person in Soviet Union. I knew little thing about Soviety Union because we have learned the revolution in the geography class few months ago and it was interesting to me. However, In Animal Farm, Napoleon he represents the Joseph Stalin in the real world because they have a lot of similar traits. Both of them were cruel dictators after the revolution and they used the military power to seize authority and they forced people to work for their own benefits. Napoleon and Joseph Stalin was a just violent dictators. Also, Squealer represents Vyacheslav Molotov because they both worked for the violent leader and Squealer changed the seven commandmends whenever Napoleon violated the seven commandments. The most poor character, Snowball represents Leon Trotsky. Both of them were eager to work hard for their own society but they failed by Napoleon and Stalin. Finally, the owner of the Manor Farm , Mr. Jones represents the emperor of Russia, Nicolas , because they both abuses the power and later on they got kick out of their society. I think the author George orwell really did great job on metaphoring and representing those people into the animals, because they all have similar characteristics.

Question 7

* are there any settings in this novel which you have found to be beautiful? or disturbing? or memorable? describe these settings and comment on why they were meaningful to you.

In this novel, Animal Farm , there were some disturbing settings, depressing settings. However, There were absolutely several settings in this novel Animal Farm that I have found to be beautiful and also memorable. I have found to be beautiful at the very beginning of the story when the old pig Major told all of the animals in the farm to meet in the barn to talk about the freedom that they should have from the evil human and he also talked about the strange dream that he had it the night before. The most memorable part or setting in this novel, Animal Farm was the part when Major taught the animals a new song which was "the Beasts of England" and when the animals were singing all together. It seemed so beautiful, every single animal from the Manor Farm looked happy and satisfied with what they were imagining for the better future that Major told them and they were happy once again thinking about that Mr. Jones would be forced to leave his own farm by them. In this setting, the moment of all animal singing together was very peaceful and happy and harmony. This song "the Beasts of England" is very meaningful because every single lyric were actually encouraging not only animals in the Manor Farm but also in other areas.

Question 6

*please choose one passage from the novel that is significant to you. why is this passage meaningful? please type it into one of your entries and comnment on what you think about the passage.

But they had not gone twenty yards when they stopped short. An uproar of voices was coming from the farmhouse. They rushed backn and looked through the window agai. Yes, a violent quarrel was in progress. There were shoutings. bangings on the table, sharp suspicious glances, furious denials, the source of the toruble appeared to be that Napoleon and Mr. Pilkington had each palyed an ace of spades simultaneously. Twelve voices were shouting in anger, and they were all alike. No question, no, what had happened to that faces of the pigs. The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again ; but already it was impossible to say shich was which.

This passage from the novel was very meaningful to me because the last sentence of the passage had a metaphor in it. The sentence "The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again ; but already it was impossible to say which was which. , it meant that pigs were actually acting just like how human did. Pigs violated all seven commandments which were 1. Whateever goes uponm two legs is an enemy. 2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend. 3. No animal shall wear clothes. 4. No animal shall sleep in bed. 5. No animal shall drink alcohol. 6. No animal shall kill any other animal. 7. All animals are equal. And if you do the opposite way of seven commandments, you are actually a human and there was a also rank/class in the animal society too. That is why Napoleon forced other animals to work for his own benefit. It is just like a dictator in soviet union, Stalin. I learned about Stalin in geography class so I know little thing about Stalin. The author of Animal Farm, George Orwell
wrote this novel in metaphor form. He described each single animal in Stalin's society.

Question 5

* what is the mood of this novel? do you find this novel saddens you in any way? why?

The mood of this novel, Animal farm is very depressing and sorrowful, because at the beginning of the story, the old pig Major talked to all animals about the freedom and they all thought that it would be peaceful after Mr. Jones leaves the Manor Farm. However, it was not peaceful after he left. As soon as Mr. Jones left, Napoleon and Snowball made seven commandments but Napoleon violated one of the seven commandments and tried to kill Snowball with his nine enormous dogs. And After this, Napoleon finally decided to do a windmill project and he made all other animals to work on it but not the pigs. He was actually violating another commandment which was "All animals are equal". But animals were forced to work on the windmill project and they got a little amount of foods and they were very tired. As time goes, Napoleon was violating the commandments one by one. He killed another animal, he communicated with human, he slept in a bed all the time, he drank alcohol, and finally he even changed the commandements that "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others." The other animals were just a slave of Napoleon, he made them work for his own benefit. This novel saddens me because all other animals thought that there would be a better life after Mr. Jones left but actually they had the worse life.

Question 4

what is the climax of this novel? what happens? how do the events of this novel make you feel?

It was hard to choose the climax because there were many scenes of point of no return in this novel. I believe the climax of this novel was the part when Napoleon suddenly stood up during the vote for the windmill thing and stared at Snowball with making weird sound, and when nine enormous dogs dashed straight for Snowball and tried to kill him. And somehow Snowball escaped the Manor farm successfully. This terrifying events of this novel made me feel very shocked and sad. I was so shocked because I thought that two of them were at least a friend but they were not, and I was shocked at Napoleon's idea because at the beginning of the story, he took the nine puppies and I was wondering why he took them but I finally knew that they were trained to guard himself and kill others after he tried to kill Snowball with those nine enormous dogs. Also, Napoleon was violating the one of the seven commandments which was "No animal shall kill any other animal." It also made me feel sad because it was not the life that all animals in the farm wanted. They thought the world would be peaceful without human, but it was not peaceful after Mr. Jones left.
